Guillaume Bijl is a self-taught artist. Since the 1970s he has been making spatial installations as an alternative to conceptual art. His work over the years can be roughly grouped in four series. These are: the 'transformation installations' in which he turns art institutions into a space with a social function; the 'situation installations' an intervention in the everyday environment that disrupts reality; the 'compositions trouvées' in which he takes banal objects out of their context and places them in the museum; and finally the "Sorry's' absurd combinations of existing objects.
