The Complete Prints and Books
Marcel Broodthaers made 26 artist’s editions between 1964 and 1975, as well as publishing 20 artist’s books from 1957 and 1975. Among the editions belongs the famous installation Le Corbeau et le Renard, comprising prints, a film and two film screens. Regarding the graphic work and books of Marcel Broodthaers, there are only a few complete collections in existence and – aside from this one – are only to be found in museums. This fact speaks volumes as to the exclusive nature of this collection.
The graphic work and books of Broodthaers are marked by the same themes that characterize his oeuvre as a whole. Chief among these themes is the status of art and the artist. As with the rest of his works, here too he manages to use the respective medium’s own characteristics in a way both unorthodox and effective, and he does this – among other ways – by always making reference to the medium itself. Indeed, this collection is a sort of Gesamtkunstwerk, where each component and the ensemble itself serve to intriguingly evoke Broodthaers’ past as a poet and his unique position in contemporary art. It is a suite of variations on the complex relationship between word and image, a very important theme of Broodthaers from the very moment he strides upon the artistic stage. This ensemble illustrates how he challenges and twists entrenched, accepted ways of thinking, to give us surprising and stimulating material results. He uses his experience as a poet to make graphic works and books that still today function like booby-traps in the world of contemporary art. He does this, among other means, by consciously smuggling mistakes or corrections into the work, or by using unusual elements like printed postcards or a strip of film.
Marcel Broodthaers stands out among the ‘conceptual’ artists who often employ philosophical language, but seldom with mastery. While most of his colleagues work away unhindered by this lack of knowledge, Broodthaers always knows more that he states. From beginning to end, he keeps mixing high and low culture in a way at once subtle and disruptive. He takes up work and myth of Baudelaire or Mallarmé, recycles old lettertypes and combines these references with everyday images. He always leaves us wondering about just how much weight he assigns to the ingredients and the results. One thing we can be sure of… he sows doubt.
