Leonard Misonne was a master pictorialist photographer, whose atmospheric landscapes and street scenes are among the finest depictions of such subject matter. He employed many processes and techniques throughout his career and championed a highly diffused printing system and light quality. To him, the only thing that made a landscape was the sky, the light and the reflection of light. Fascinated by the depth light could bring, he used to say “The subject is nothing, Light is everything”. To take his pictures, he traveled by bicycle all over Belgium and actually won many bike races. Misonne’s work is in the collections of hundreds of museums, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the San Diego Museum of Photographic Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, the George Eastman House, the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, the Amon Carter Museum, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, the Rijksmuseum, the Norsk Museum for Fotografi, the National Museum of American History, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Sydney Art Gallery of New South Wales.
