Tom Liekens ( Bonheiden 1977 )

The oeuvre of Tom Liekens consists of monumental paintings. His large-scale panoramas incorporate cultural references and place them in a new context. The themes in his work include the sublimity of nature versus the insignificance of human beings, relations between the sexes, desire and melancholy. His work is dense with literary and art-historical references; not only modern and comtemporary masters but also their Romantic and Baroque predecessors are a source of inspiration.
