After studies at the art academies of Molenbeek and Brussels, he comes in contact with the editors of the 7 Arts review, becoming one of the young defenders of 'pure plasticism'. He gradually detaches himself from 7 arts, and in 1926 founds the group Humanisme together with Réne Bart. Thereafter he seeks contact with the Brussels surrealist group, but is soon banished from their circle.
